Mayors and Other Iowa People and Their Favorite Childhood Books

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

In 1996, Lee Clancey became the first woman mayor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is a very conservative mayor who cares about the issues rather than popularity.

Q. What was your favorite childhood book?
A. I had many favorite books from that time including the whole series of Nancy Drew mysteries by Caroline Keene, the Little House in the Woods series by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. My very favorite, though, was Charlotte's Web by E. B. White. I loved the strong, independent female characters and the story of friendship between such diverse characters. It was a real favorite, and I read it many times.
